Steps of Met

A man and his shadow, and the glint of sun and a jaunty hat – walking up the steps to the Metropolitan Museum.
I have been asked many times how this shot was done, so here goes: I was sitting on the steps of the Met facing 5th ave, when I noticed the way the light was striking people as they walked up the steps, and how dark the background was. I was not thinking about their shadows. Film. circa 1993.

I don’t have much space in my little studio to hang pictures, but I’ve had a small 5 x 7 of this on my wall for many years. It works well at a small size. I used to experiment, trying to see how small a print could be and still carry an emotional punch. This shot always worked for me as a small print.
