I was in Paris three different times. I used to be able to read French fluently, but could never speak it well enough to make myself understood without some gestures and pointing.
Still I found (25 plus years ago) that it was my favorite place to photograph. I always went back to the same little hotel in the banking area; and each day set out, just like I would in New York without a plan.
Just head out into the smell of baking bread, and wonderful butter, and follow my nose. The only landmarks on my list were of course the Eiffel Tower, but even better — a tour of the various graveyards.
To see Jim Morrison’s grave was at the very least thrilling; but even more so great monuments to immortal artists.
