Need to figure out what category this is supposed to go into.  Abstract?  I think I only have three images I’d call abstract.  Homage to Van Gogh?  As a category.  No, I only have one, no maybe two.  The image is tricked out in several ways.  First off, it’s flipped vertically.  What I saw when looking through the viewfinder was this.

This is how the poor fellow began:

Raw version from camera

What did I see in this bland oil slick?  First off, I always like to photograph oil slicks in color because of the chance of getting wavy rainbows.  Pools of all colors.  And to have the cobblestones (Brooklyn) and the reflection of the long-ago far-away factory.  I knew I would do something with it.

Well I supersaturated it and flipped it and applied the kitchen sink, and all the time going after the Van Gogh look but not too exactly.

And voila. An image I still enjoy.

An oil slick on a puddle reflects the factory across the way. A photograph, but with the feel of post impressionism.

I've been photographing New York, mostly in black and white, for the last 35 years. In other words, I began in the age of Tri-x and D-76 and eventually moved into the world of pigment ink. Enjoy your stay - Dave
