Black and White Photographs of New York - Dave Beckerman

google question

So right now - this blog has it’s own domain on a different server from my main site - DaveBeckerman.com

Was that a dumb idea in terms of google ranking? If I were to move it to the same domain as DaveBeckerman.com would it be better for both the blog and main site ranking?

Seems to me that the answer is probably yes. The reason I put it on a separate domain was that I wanted to test (this is some time ago) the other hosting company and also because the blog is hosted under Unix and the main site is Windows 2000. I’m thinking of moving the main site to a Unix server and then moving this blog there as well.

As far as “Page Rank” goes - they’re both the same right now - at 5.

Frankly - I should prob. leave it alone since I’ve got more work than I can handle right now anyway - but I guess that SEO desire doesn’t die easily.

Dave,
I had the same thoughts when I first got the nonphotography.com domain and moved my site to a better and improved server. mainly because when one searched for street photography on google my site would be one of the top sites. but if you keep updating and linking your site it won’t take long before it will be ranked up there again, maybe it will even do better :)

Hi Dave — under most circumstances, having both on the same domain would give you the best SEO benefit. Your main i.e. “corporate” site will attract a lot of high quality inbound links, while your blog pushes out good content with relevant keywords, alt tags, etc. So these two combine well for a good dynamic site with search engine appeal.

What’s nice about separate sites is that you effectively have two chances to appears in the search results.

The best solution might be to host it all on one domain, but have the blog set up as a subdomain — this retains the ability to appear twice in the results (at least in Google, I’m not sure about the others), while retaining maximum benefit to the core domain.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the good advise. Basically that’s what I’ve done. I started the new blog on the http://www.DaveBeckerman.com site (Volume II) - which also gives me practical benefits in terms of only having to manage and pay for the one domain; and I’m going to set it up as a sub-domain once I’ve gotten some content into it.

I suppose at some point I should move the old blog (this one) content into the new one - but it isn’t that easy to do in Wordpress. Hopefully Google doesn’t hurt me for just keeping this old one around.

Hi Dave. One thing to remember when you’re moving domains is to set up 301 re-directs from your old domain to the new home. This is a search engine friendly way of doing it.. in theory, you should preserve the google link juice you’ve built up and not loose pagerank
