Painter Mirrors

8 April, 2008 (19:45) | abstract

One of the framing shops on Second Avenue has really cool prints that are part mirror, and part Jasper Johns painting. I asked the owner if he had any other mirror / paintings but he said that so far his supplier could only give him Jasper Johns, but that he’d keep his eye open for other painter / mirrors.

A great example of trompe d’oeil (Yiddish for ‘fooled the goy’). Now Dave, if you could just convince the Met to pay you one thousandth of what they paid for for that Jasper Johns painting that looks like a bad plastering job, you’ll have it made.

What is going on here?

When I’m bored, I like to walk along a surreal edge and see if I can arrive at an image that plays with our conceptions of what is a “proper” perspective a la M.C. Escher. And that’s all that’s going on here.

Sorry. To be more specific, what is going on in the print (i.e. how are they acheiving the mirror effect with the print seemingly reflected(?) in it)? Merely a version of trompe l’oeil? I did like your first answer though, Dave.

Whoops, now I get it. I can’t tell who’s serious here anymore. Not that I ever could…..
