Workflow Notes / Lightroom 2.0 Beta

workflow_notes Workflow Notes / Lightroom 2.0 Beta

Stumbled across these “workflow”notes from March. I don’t remember writing them; but they seem accurate. I am often asked about my “workflow,” so this may be helpful. Personally, although it looks like my handwriting, I’m not able to decipher all of it.

At any rate - what you’re seeing is mostly the result of the camera and the lenses. The camera is always set to give more data in the highlights; and the lenses are both very good f1.4 lenses (canon 50mm, and sigma 30mm).

One other point, and this is fascinating: the next version of Lightroom will have the ability to deal with larger images, and will have some tools that are very close to masks; in other words, Photoshop will not be needed at all. Here’s a link to the Lightroom 2.0 Beta (thanks to Luke who sees everything before I do).

Here’s the Lightroom blurb:

  • With Localized Corrections, photographers can now enhance targeted and specific areas of an image for unsurpassed fexibility and control. For example, darken only the sky in a landscape photo, or sharpen only the eyes in a portrait.
  • An improved layout in the Library module allows for a more intuitive approach to image organization.
  • Smart Collections automatically updates collections with images that match desired criteria such as star-rating, keyword, or other metadata.
  • Suggested Keywords eases the task of keywording by making recommendations based on keyword associations.
  • Additionally, you get support for a dual monitor configuration; the ability to correct specific parts of an image without affecting other areas; dodge and burn using the same non-destructive approach; and much more.

At any rate - most of what you see is the result of: 40D with Highlight Priority + Very good lenses + Lightroom with HSL 100% Desaturated + Tweeks in Lightroom + dare I say it - talent.

I note that 16 x 24 is the largest size you are printing from scanned 35mm negatives. As a matter of interest have you tried any of these 40D Lightroom files at larger sizes?

Stephen - you know what - I haven’t done them at 24 x 36. I suspect that they’ll hold up - but I’ve been too busy printing large stuff for clients and I’ve sort of been afraid of running out of paper once I get into doing the big tests. But I will soon. Frankly, I would prefer to have this exact 40D but with about 20 mp. That would just be as good as it gets for me. When I try the big ones - I’ll definitely do a post.

Dare to say it, Dave: It’s The Talent.

BTW, tomorrow morning I have to assist a client and photographer-friend who had a last-second gig materialize, and, for the occasion, went out and bought a Canon 5D on the never-never (Brit-speak for putting it on plastic). He’s done tons of wedding and event shooting on film, but this is his first El Serioso foray into digital. Gonna be an interesting day, ’specially because (1) I have to make a minor fix on a client’s MacBook with a stuck DVD in the drive smack in the middle of this digital gig, and (2) I have to rush into Manhattan mid-afternoon to secure tickets to a Film Forum double feature (From Russia With Love and Billy Wilder’s One, Two, Three, in case you’re wondering). Friday was supposed to be a relatively “easy” day for me…and let’s not talk about Saturday.

Good Luck! I think you’ll enjoy One, Two, Three. I’ve seen it twice.

BTW - when you were here, you left your paper, The Onion. What an enjoyable read that was for me. So many cultural things going on in Brooklyn; esp. of intrerest was Paul Simon’s gig at the BAM. I have that CD from the Broadway Musical that went bust - but the music was just so good.

Anyway - I think I’ll see if I can get a subscription to the Onion. Reminded me of the days I spent in the East Village.
