Hairdresser IV

Sometimes I just photograph things becomes I don’t understand them; that counts for a lot of my photographs. This is a high-end hairdresser on 86th street. But what are these iv-looking bags doing in the window? Are they used for dying hair? I guess it’s possible, but it gives me the chills. Maybe a Sweeney Todd Hairdresser?

IV bags, I find this hard to believe.

Maybe we’re on to something here. There is a possibility this image is some sort of Freudian slip from Dave, and these are the intravenous feeding bags that actually supply him nourishment. How else could Dave find nourishment while giving us such quantities of excellent images, entertaining writing, and printing orders? Who would of ever thought Buddy is board certified to do this procedure; he is isn’t he? Dave, I’m not going to ask about the Foley’s, somethings just shouldn’t be talked about.

A bit of a self-portrait there.

This is an interesting trip down memory lane. When I was a student for a while I shared a house with a pharmacist just as glass blood infusion bottles were being replaced with bags that looked just like these. We acquired all the old blood bottles from the local hospital and used them to bottle home brew beer.
We never figured out how to get beer into a blood bag though!

Maybe IV bags are used for hair dye. I’m going to stop by the shop tomorrow and ask what the display is all about. It’s not, btw, a nail place. It seems to be a place that specializes in hair dye. Oh, yes - you can see half of me reflected on the right side of the image.
My secret for writing and producing as much as I have - it’s mostly fun. I’m really very lazy. I just do what I like. Very little of it feels like ‘work,’ to me. Maybe sometimes the packaging gets to be a bit much - but as you can tell if you’ve been reading the blog for a while - I can even get excited if I figure out some easier way to do the packaging.
I’ve always had this theory that the most productive people are basically lazy. By that I mean, they are always looking for ways to make things easier - and so they invent productivity tools which ironically makes them more efficient. Just an idea - but I’ll bet that most good programmers are - deep down - lazy.

Beauty salons are the great sweatshops of the 21st century. To remain competitive each hairdresser has to employ a bevy of manicurists from Korea. Many of these girls are illegal and are paid far less than minimum wage. On the eve of the week-end rush, when the demand for beauty is highest, these exploited souls from Seoul are not even allowed a five-minute break as they toil over toe nails. Hence the intravenous bags. The liquid inside the bags is neither botox nor hair dye for customers. It is liquid nutrition for the manicurists, who are given no time at all to eat. Foley catheters are also inserting at the other end to obviate the need for bathroom breaks. I think the world is ready, Dave, for a photographic expose of the underworld of personal grooming.
