Now here’s the real question: is this flute player a “flutist” or a “flautist”, or, as I was refered to upon attempting to play the flute, a “flatulist”?

I did a little research on this (seriously). Flutist (from the French, flute) seems to be prefered according to wiki. Flautist first appears in the 18th century and is used in a jocular manner to describe the flute player.
