I agree with Lester. The priorities of our government are screwed up!

The homeless - probably the most over-photographed strata of urban life. I don’t know if it was 20 years ago, or 30 years ago, but around that time the state mental institutions were emptied onto the streets. There is no “low-income” housing. Results are as you see. Most of the homeless that I encounter suffer from: mental illness or some type of chemical addiction.
So how about this as a crazy idea: deal with drug abuse as an illness not a crime; and yes, society would have to either offer very low-cost housing that could be paid for by SSI, or go back to taking the mentally ill off the streets. In other words, there is a section of society that cannot take care of themselves. If they can - then there are programs like the Doe Foundation etc. But if they can’t - can you imagine a politician asking for money to clothe and feed the homeless?
At any rate - with Investment Banks going out of business - we’re not that many steps away from learning about this issue first hand.

I think we need a book on the NYC homeless, Dave. Not a book with lots of statistics or holier-than-thou rhetoric. But a picture book with brutally honest images that really reflect who we are as a society. We can bail out big mortgage companies and investment houses, but we can’t take care of people like Sal. Look at that pathetic cupcake! If over the last five years (the anniversary is coming up this month) we had spent on housing, the amount we spent in Iraq, we could provide every homeless family in this country with a decent place to live. Do the math. We really need this book, Dave.
