Fat Sal’s Pizza

Been shooting in early (I mean early) morning light and then getting on with the rest of my day which right now involves printing. My Canon 40D continues to make me very happy.
I sold the Canon G9 to a fellow I met through the blog; and as you may have figured, I did sell off the film cameras; so I’m going full steam ahead into digital world again.
Yes, the Leicas, and even the Hexar classic - all gone.
I used the money I got for the German glass to pick up some lenses for the Canon, as well as enough supplies to last me for most of the year, another 2 TB of storage, a hub, more CF cards, and I still have some money left over to pick up the larger wacom tablet I’ve wanted.
I’m just no good at keeping cameras around that I’m not using. I do still have one lone EOS Elan film camera so that I can do infrared film when I’m in the mood.
I guess everyone’s different when it comes to the whole equipment thing. I may buy and sell a lot of equipment (cameras and lenses) over the course of my lifetime - but at the end I’m sure I’ll be left with one camera and one lens.
And did I miss the M bodies as I walked out of the small trading room at B&H? Not at all. In fact, I was happy to let them recirculate. Could I have gotten more money through eBay, yes, but I just wanted to pack ‘em up and get them out of the house. Let somebody get good use from them.
Current shooting equipment: Canon 40D, Sigma 30 F1.4, Canon 20 mm f2.8, Canon 50 mm f1.4.
There might be a connection between the pigeons enjoying cold pizza and getting rid of the film cameras - another form of recirculation I suppose. But I don’t think I’ve ever taken a loss on pizza. Well, I feel nice and light again - ready for my next adventure.

Dave, you’ve got me thinking about all the equipment I have sitting around that doesn’t get much use. It’s like having more than one motorcycle. You can only ride one at a time.–Brent

So it finally was goodbye to the M6. I can understand your reasoning to get the cash for the other stuff you needed.
While I’m about 90 percent digital I still like the Leica and Bessa cameras for quick street and candid work. What I don’t have the time for is developing the film. I’ve pretty much standardized on Ilford XP 2 Super their chromogenic N&W film that can be deleveloped as C 41 by any quick one hour lab. Its ISO from 200 to 800 and is pretty good stuff. All I need to do is scan the negs.
So Dave, welcome back to the digital world for the second time. Hope you stay a while.

Prashant - G9 - I don’t use it if I have the dslr (40D) plus the results are just so-so (I don’t have the energy to explain so-so) compared to shooting with a decent sensor and good glass.
Speaking of good Canon glass: 50mm f1.4 (I suppose this is their best non “L” lens); and the 28mm f2.8 (o.k. for full frame, but best for cropped sensor).
Craig - I believe this time I’m back for keeps. What I expect is that I’ll be playing the digital obsolete camera game for a while - until I get enough megapixels. Let’s see if I’m finally settling down.

My prediction is that you will get another Canon body with more megapixels.

I predict a 5D or anything that Canon may come up with… I know I’ll stick with mine even though the M8 is tempting in one way, but doesn’t deliver in too many other ways…
If you want to treat yourself with a truly great EOS 28mm, especially on full farme, I can highly recommend the 28mm f1.8 - USM - quiet, fast and low distortion for a low price tag (we all know what we need to pay for a Leica ASPH)… the 28mm f2.8 stinks in many of those aspects, AF is noisy and barrel distortion close-up is *yuck*

thanks dave,
I’ve been thinking of G9 as a walk-around camera, but will cancel it now. May be my D80+another smaller prime like 24mm.

I’ve had my G9 for about 3 months now. It will remain my have-around-me-all-the-time camera until something better appears. The DSLR comes out when I’m out there focusing on photography; my G9 for all other times.

Just bought the Nikon D 80 and than added the Sigma 30 mm 1.4 based upon Dave’s recommendations. Its a very fast combination.

Have you considered the Sony DSC V3 or the DSC 828 for digital infrared? Both will capture in RAW. Just add a 093 infrared filter and press NightShot and you’re good to go.

Thomas — I haven’t started to look into the digital IR scene yet. There seem to be a lot of options including modifying Canon Dslr’s; and some made for IR digital dslrs.
I’m still too involved with Lightroom / and film-like shooting. Thanks - I’ll file this one away for when I’m ready for it.

My money is also on you having a 5D within 3 months….I can highly recommend it. I echo Markus’s recommendation of the 28mm f1.8.
By the way, your old 50mm f1.4 that you sold me a few years back, is still going strong!

Sigh…and the train kept a- rollin’…
Dave: I’m not into doing big-time digital stuff (can’t deal with SLRs of almost any stripe anymore), but like toying with my little Casio EX850. But I’ll say this much: I have shot with the Canon 5D, and just can’t see you not getting one before long (either the current one, or the allegedly upcoming MkII). Maybe it’s just me, but crop-factored dSLRs, when I’ve shot with them, drive me just s little nuts.
In the end, to each his/her own.

So how does the process work with B+H? You go in and they tell you what they’re willing to pay? Is there a great deal of haggling? What would you estimate as the discount vs. ebay, 80 cents on the dollar?
thanks

JB. No haggling. I put the stuff on the counter and they tell me what they will pay. You don’t do nearly as well as if you sell through eBay; but you also don’t need to deal directly with several customers, shipping etc. Email me and I’ll give you an idea of what they pay though you should be able to figure it out by looking at what they sell their used equipment for, and figuring out what a retailers profit margin is.

Quite a few years ago my wife and I saw a whole mess of pigeons feeding on an entire pizza pie at the corner of 7th and 56th, there’s a tiny plaza with benches there, and right next to the plaza there was a decent pizza place, don’t remember the name of it. It was surreal watching the pigeons walk through the mozzarella, you could see the cheese stretching as they lifted they little feet walking around. Must have been about 15 or more mulling around that pie…
