Skating Rink, Night

I’ve finished going through 2004 digital shots. There are about 10 that I’ll be adding to the store. Now I go to 2005, (I stopped digital in Aug. 2005) and so that’s the end of that, and I can consider myself caught up. Meantime, of course, I’m still shooting with the 40D like crazy - so you never really do get caught up.

I’ll agree with Eric. The shot seems so sparkly and crisp, just like it probably was.

The people on the ice look like a Degas, which makes the static stuff look even sharper. Great image!
What was this shot with?

One of the nice things about shooting digital, is that I can tell you exactly what this was shot with:
Digital Rebel with 24mm prime lens, f3.5, one second exposure, ASA 200. Obviously on a tripod. I used a digital rebel for about three months before going for the 20D which I then used for about 9 months before going back to film. Two and a half years with film, and now I’m back to the 40D.

Dave, putting aside any gained knowledge from over the past 2.5 years, have you noticed any real quality, converting, and/or photoshopping changes from the 20D to 40D?

Great question.
Short answer: yes.
The 40D has HIGHLIGHT PRIORITY MODE
LIGHTROOM makes it easy to rescue whatever exists from the area on the right of the histogram in a non-destructive way.
So, I can get more information in the highlight region from the 40D than I could with the 20D WITHOUT killing the shadow detail. That’s the important point. Anyone can expose for the highlights and get it in the middle of the histogram.
The issue was being able to pick up shadow detail and highlight detail at the same time. And I’ve been doing this with the combination of the 40D in Highlight Priority Mode and with Lightroom.
Also: the Analog / Digital conversion of the 40D is now 14 bits per channel, or 42 bits RGB RAW, as opposed to 36 bits RGB RAW for the 20D; so again there’s more info being passed along to the processing engine; and it does make a difference in terms of gradations from shade to shade.
I could go on about other features of the 40D in terms of shooting that I like - but I won’t. This is mainly about image quality, not how the buttons are placed.

I am intrigued with the highlight priority mode. I have a digital rebel XTI that I use when I am not shooting 4×5, and the highlight issue is a problem. I rented a 5D to see how it worked, and while it is a great camera, it has the same problem. Since I still do 4×5 most of the time, I am going to wait for the next round of cameras in hopes that highlight priority mode gets enhanced. While HDR is nice, I only use digital for stuff where I cannot use a tripod and multiple exposures.
